HAND FEEDING

Hand feeding your rescue dog can be a great way to bond with them and earn their trust.  It can also be a time to reinforce your dog’s need for grabbing food quickly and guarding.

Pay attention to the quality of the treat you are giving.  A carrot versus a piece of pizza is a different value.  Some rescue dogs may take a carrot nicely but try to devour the pizza fingers and all.  They may never have had this type of treat.

Remember rescue dogs have a highly developed sense of smell.  They know what you're giving before you give it.  Be aware of your rescue dogs reaction to certain treats.  How important is it to your rescue dog?

Make sure if you have multiple dogs they have plenty of space.   Each dog needs to sit quietly.    When you first start this process, have your treats ready ahead of time.   Each dog needs to stay in a seated position to receive their treat.  They need to take it nicely out of  your hand.

For more rambunctious dogs you may need to alter your hand position or start with setting the treat on the floor.   Always be aware of your dogs excitement level and your environment.    You know your dog best.   Make sure you and your dog are always safe.  Noone wants a bite or a fight.
