DIGGING

Many rescue dogs dig.  Its one of their favorite past times.

They can be searching for food, small animals, or minerals  They can be making a cool dirt spot to lay in, They can be finding good smells or feeling a soft smooth texture on their paws.  They could be burying their favorite toy or bone.

HELP WITH DIGGING

A rescue dog can be assigned a certain place they’re allowed to dig.  Encourage them to dig in the same area.  Oftentimes once they start a hole they like to continue working the same spot.  The hole is already started and it's easier to dig the next time.

Multiple dogs can help dig a hole.  They can even take turns sharing the hole.

A shovel can be kept handy to fill the holes.   This is good exercise for humans.  It also encourages the family to check the yard frequently and see what their rescue dog has been up to.

When digging up your garden, a rescue dog can be invaluable.  They have lots of energy and can dig much faster than we can.  Who knew you had a new family member that could become a professional gardener?
