Assess the situation
You know your dog, their habits, and their health. What is different and what is the same?
Check for blood, wounds, injuries, not eating or slowed down eating, drinking excessively, not drinking much, difficulty defecating or urinating, diarrhea, excessive urination, vomiting, worms, fleas, ticks, excessive panting, touchy in certain spots, more aggressive behavior than usual, wanting to be left alone, laying around.

What if it's a dog that you don't know?

Always use caution with a strange dog. Look for signs of stress, growling, barking, tense body. Do not approach if the situation is dangerous. Call your local police or humane officer.

If the dog is friendly and you are able to approach, assess the situation as best as you can. See if you can find tags with information on the dog. Ask neighbors if they know who the dog belongs to. Call your local police or humane officer if you need help.

Dog first aid classes are available and are invaluable to help your dog as well as other dogs. The classes go over topics such as assessment, bleeding, trauma, cpr, wounds, breathing, and other important medical concerns.

Many medications that are for humans are toxic to your rescue dog. Keep your medications locked away and do not let your dog get into them.
As with any medical situation that you need help with, contact your veterinarian right away and seek professional help.
