Should you take your dog to a dog friendly store or a dog event?    These are great opportunities for socialization.  They can also be full of stress and anxiety.   Where is your dog as far as experience with being in a crowd?   If they’ve been in crowded places many times, then you know how they will react and what you will need to do to manage any behaviors.   If this is their first time, go slow. 

Be cautious when entering a store.  Keep away from other dogs and people as much as possible until your dog has a chance to sniff and become a little familiar with their environment.  Go during slower times to ensure this will be a successful trip.   Community events are a good chance to meet other dogs and other dog people.  

If this is your first event with your dog, take your time.  Stay on the outside and let your dog sniff.   Go slowly and let your dog get used to the noise and chaos.   Find an area that’s less busy and start there.   Have your dog on a short leash.   Give your dog plenty of praise and reassurance.   Nervousness and excitement are very common.   The more your dog goes out and socializes, the more you get to know their cues and can manage behaviors.   The more in tune you and your dog are with each other, the more fun you’ll both have.
